Subject: KStep - Encoder Setup
My encoders have finally arrived, and I have finally wired them up. Seems like I am having issues understanding how the Configuration screen needs to be set up. I am using a quadrature encoder connected to the back of each stepper.

Current Wiring:

Output
1. Set to CL Step
2. Stepper wired to J2 on the K-Step board (It jogs fine when running in open loop - set to 8 with 1 gain).

Input  - Questions
1. Set to "Encoder"
2. I Connected my encoders to the Ethernet JP5 connector on the Kflop board
3. The encoder has two phases "A" and "B" - Why is there only one input available on the configuration screen?
4. The input Channel does not have the IO available for JP5 on the drop down menu. The Kflop documentation for JP5 states that IO36 is for "Encoder 4 Input Phase A" and IO 37 is for "Encoder 4 Input Phase B". How do I properly.

Hi Scott,

The InputChan0 setting defines which Encoder Hardware Device to be used.  Not the pin numbers.  In the same way as the OutputChan0 refers to s Step/Dir generator to be used not pin numbers.  Maybe this post will help:

Tom,

I read through the post, though not for the K-Step I think I undertsand the point. If I have an encoder plugged in to IO36 and 37, I would be for "encoder 4" and I would choose "4" from the drop down list. Sound correct?

A few more questions about the K-Step.
1. Do the programs "KStepAxis0.mot" use the microstepping function of the K-Step?
2. I would like to Microstep with the encoder attached. Would I use the drop down for "CL Micro"?

The documentation for closed loop stepper talks about putting it in "CL Step" mode, and gives an example of microstepping. I am confused, is "CL Step" already microstepping?

Hi Scott,

In our terminology "Microstep" mode is completely different from Step/Dir mode and refers to a method of directly commanding coil currents in a sine/cosine manner.  Our SnapAmp can use this method.

For Step/Dir mode KFLOP simply outputs Step pulses and has no control or knowledge of how those are handled by the stepper driver.  They might be full steps or any level of microsteps.  KSTEP is fixed at always doing 16X microstepping.

So yes, CL Step does closed loop microstepping when using KSTEP.
